The Amsterdam Espresso Coffeeshop at the corner of 2nd & Forest in the center of Detroit is my headquarters in the Motor City and the official outpost of Radio Free Amsterdam in America. I sat down on an idyllic Monday afternoon in October at one of the picnic tables outside on the grounds of the venerable Forest Arms apartments—my first home in Detroit back in 1964—and talked with Amsterdam Espresso proprietors David & Hali Ampersand about the establishment of the coffeeshop, their involvement with Burning Man and their personal mission to New Orleans to help out after the Flood of 2005, and we listened to music from New Orleans and Detroit by Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Dr. John, Lil’ Queenie & the Percolators, Odessa Harris, the Detroit Cobras, the Brothers Groove, John Sinclair with Dutch rappers LangeFrans & Baas B, and Kermit Ruffins.
