Amsterdam Espresso Coffeeshop, Detroit

I spent almost six weeks in Detroit this summer and found myself rooted at the Amsterdam Espresso Coffeeshop at Forest & 2nd, just south of the Wayne State University campus and mystically located in the Forest Arms Apartments, the very building whose other basement apartment (B-2) I’d occupied in the spring of 1964 when I moved from Flint to Detroit to attend graduate school at WSU. The excellent coffee, powerful Wi-Fi service and comfortable, convenient location brought me back to the Amsterdam Espresso almost every day. The week before I left Detroit I got out my little Olympus A-320 digital recorder and cut an episode of the radio show at the coffeeshop, visiting with Scott Stone and Rodriguez and playing blues records from Detroit today by the Motor City R&B Pioneers, Alberta Adams, Johnnie Bassett, Odessa Harris, John Sinclair & His Motor City Blues Scholars live at the Detroit International Jazz Festival 2006, the Bill Heid Trio, Joe Weaver, Thornetta Davis, and Kenny Martin.
