Caffe Etc.-

Los Angeles Ca.
Mike Stark and I recorded the conversation for this episode—a Joint Production with his show on KPMD-FM in Cerritos CA—at the estimable Caffe Etc on Cahuenga Blvd across from the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. He cut up our talk with selections from the CD in the back of Guitar Army and wrote this introduction:
A DAY WITH JOHN SINCLAIR
If you don’t know who John Sinclair is, then this 45-minute piece will give you a starting point. I spent an hour interviewing him, then had dinner with him and took him to and from a poetry reading, but there are more stories to tell about my day with him than I’ve been able to capture in this short overview. At some future time I’ll share more of that day with you.
In the piece I’ve focused on the things in his life that have made him famous or infamous—depending on which side of the world you are on. If you know about John already, then you might get a new prospective about those crazy times with the MC5, dope and revolution.
He has re-released his work from 35 years ago, Guitar Army, which includes additional photos not in the original printing and a 17-track CD of various sounds and songs. My piece contains several cuts from that CD from artists that John was associated with including Up, Rationals, Uprising and the MC5. From the starting point my piece gives you, the next stop is this book.
Many thanks to John for some great dialogue and a day that I won’t soon forget.
“Rock 50″ with Mike Stark airs live every Saturday at 11am Pacific time at WPMD.org.
Producer’s Note: I have added three “live” selections from my concert at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 28, 2007, with Wayne Kramer (guitar, announcement) & the Lexington Arts Ensemble with Charles Moore (trumpet), Buzzy Jones (saxophones), Phil Ranelin (triombone), Doug Lunn (bass) & Brock Avery (drums).
