Fantasio, one of Amsterdam’s original modern music venues that opened just one day before the Paradiso came into play about 35 years ago, has just re-established itself in the building that houses the National Pop Institute on the Prins Hendrikskade just east of the Centraal Station. On this Friday night producer Jules Otto is throwing a CD release party at Fantasio for Mark Ritsema’s new album project, Night Porter, and Larry Hayden and I feel right at home as we play some numbers from Mark’s Night Porter album and listen to several numbers I’ve recorded with Mark (from our duet album criss cross) and with his band Raskolnikov, plus fine recorded music from the James Brown Orchestra, Smiley Lewis, the ReBirth Brass Band, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, John Coltrane, and the Dutch rock band Alquin.
