Anthony is an Amsterdam-based painter, conceptual artist and producer of spectacular art exhibitions like the recent Inventors, Makers Movers show at Arti Amici gallery in October 2006. For this project Anthony invited 18 artists of diverse origin to create a new art
work inspired by a particular invention patented by a black inventor. He
documented the project from inception to exhibition on DVD and through
this series of ImageMakers radio programs for Radio Free Amsterdam
that brought the artists to the microphone with Anthony to discuss their
participation in the project and their own interpretations of the inventions
theyrsquo;d chosen to honor by creating a new work.

Common Ground Radio Workshop 2008 on the Air

After missing last yearrsquo;s session I was back at Common Ground on the Hill at McDaniel College in Westminster MD and helping conduct the Radio Production Workshop with Cary Wolfson (the Red Rooster) and Mike Atherton, our indefatigable engineer and technical director for the class, which had about 10 participants this year, most of high school age. Over the series of five 90-minute sessions we got the kids involved in creating and recording segments for the one-hour radio program we would produce out of their efforts, and then worked with them on the editing process and assembled this episode for Radio Free Amsterdam featuring music by Common Ground faculty members La Gilmore, Scott Ainslie, Sparky Rucker and Mike Baytop, and by student participants Gahdiliel, Phil Speiss, Emmanuel Ortiz and Emily Rosenthal, along with conversations among students Maria Marquez, Vaughn Sewell, Beverly Williamson, Jacinta Garcia and Jesus Martinez.

Itrsquo;s the first anniversary of our brother program, The Dopecast from Dopefiend.co.uk, and Henk and I are paying tribute by rebroadcasting a couple of episodes from The Dopecast as our way of saying Happy Anniversary and Many Happy Returns! The first is an excerpt from Dopecast #37 if my memory serves, an extended testimonial to the John Sinclair Show, and the second is the entire Dopecast #20 from last spring, recorded here at The Dolphins with The Dopefiend and his psychedelic sidekick, The Toker. The Dopefiend manages to slip in a couple of my tunes as well.

I made my first trip to the Far East this weekend to participate in an event at the Tokyo Hipster Club centered on 1968, the MC-5 and the revolutionary movement in America, where I was interviewed on stage by the Japanese journalist musician Gaku Torii with brilliant spontaneous translations from American into Japanese by Yuske in front of a full house of receptive, curious and responsive music lovers, mostly in their 20s and 30s, who paid close attention to our conversation throughout the 2-hour presentation. Before the show I sat with my friend Yukiko Akigawa, my THC host Maki Fujimoto, Yuske and Gaku to conduct an episode of the radio show in Tokyo, with music by the Wild Magnolias with Japanese guitarist June Yamagishi, Miles Davis, two selections by Gakursquo;s band Loaded from its new album Pull the Trigger, and John Sinclair with Wayne Kramer the Lexington Arts Ensemble ldquo;liverdquo; in Los Angeles, plus a passage from a conversation with Wayne Kramer I had recorded at the City Inn in London the previous Sunday afternoon.

The Great Originator Ellas McDaniel, professionally known as Bo Diddley, became one of the founders of rock roll music when Checker Records released his first single, ldquo;Bo Diddleyrdquo; b/w ldquo;I'm a Manrdquo; in 1955. Born in McComb, Mississippi in 19__ and raised in Chicago from the age of 6, Bo passed away on June 2 at his home in Archer, Florida at the age of 79. This episode celebrates the life music of Bo Diddley and fellow pioneers Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Fats Dominomdash;the Mount Rushmore of Rock Rollmdash;who reshaped the sound of popular music in 1955 with their smash releases on Chess, Checker, Specialty Imperial Records. We also bow our heads to some of their illustrious progenitors from the Crescent City: Roy Brown, Professor Longhair, Lloyd Price and Bobby Charles. But itrsquo;s mostly Bo Diddley all the way.
