Detroit 420 Party with John Sinclair & Glowb, Holice P. Wood All Stars

This episode comes beaming out of the Jazz Loft in downtown Detroit from the 4th Annual John Sinclair 420 Party, Music & Art Fair produced by Holice P. Wood every April 20 in celebration of the benevolent weed and the spirit of freedom and resistance shared by so many of us who smoke it in the Motor City & environs. The 2008 show added an opening set by Glowb, my homies from Flint, and I joined them on a couple of numbers before the Holice P. Wood All Stars—Chris Codish, keyboards & vocals; Bobby East, guitar; Paul Randolph, bass & vocals; and Skeeto Valdez, drums—took the stage for the rest of the evening, with Mike Boulan of No Cover Records in the house and at the recording controls to take everything down. The “live” selections from the 420 Party are capped by closing music recorded the next night at the Jazz Loft for my project THE DETROIT ALBUM with Jeff Grand on guitar, Johnny Evans on tenor saxophone, Phil Hale at the keyboards, and Tino Gross on drums, with my very special guest Thornetta Davis adding her voice to the ensemble. All music recorded in Detroit April 20-21 by Mike Boulan and edited & assembled at the HeadPress Bunker in London on May 24, 2008.

We’ll hear from the Johnny Otis Show, Leon Thomas & Full Circle, Count Basie & His Orchestra, the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop with George Adams & Don Pullen, Homesick James, Roosevelt Sykes, Jimmy Reed, Ann Arbor’s own Mojo Boogie Band, Sun Ra & His Intergalactic Discipline Arkestra, and John Sinclair & His Amsterdam Blues Scholars.

When I’m in Detroit I’ve been working and recording for the past year with a large improvisational ensemble called the Pinkeye Orchestra. We made an album together last summer called Tearing Down the Shrine of Truth & Beauty and it was released November 1st at a concert at the Park Bar at Park & Elizabeth in downtown Detroit where we performed two of the pieces from the album and excerpts from my Homage to John Coltrane suite. These performances are combined for this episode with readings by Aurora Harris and George Tysh from the MOCAD Detroit City Poetry event of April 16, 2009.

My old friend Gary Lockwood invited me to participate in the annual “Who’s Yer Mama” Earth Day festival presented by the Standing Rock Cultural Arts organization in Kent, Ohio and offered an irresistible incentive with the promise that the legendary Kidney Brothers, Robert on guitar & vocals and Jack on tenor saxophone & harmonica, plus bassist Bill Watson, would be on hand to back me up. I knew all these guys in the early 1970s and they play even better today, as they demonstrated at our concert at the Kent Stage theater on April 25. On stage they played an opening set and then brought me on, but for this episode I’ve integrated our performances to feature four of my selections and four of theirs, with Robert singing on three and Jack Kidney singing his composition “Somebody Shot Him.”

4th anniversary

Our little gang of blues mental patients from America, England and Holland gathered at the 420 Café on the evening of American Thanksgiving for our annual concert in memory of my friend Bill Barth, the Memphis guitarist who lived in Holland for his last 30 years or so and who initiated this series of annual events with me around the turn of the 21st century. Bill’s gone now, but we meet to remember him every year at this time, and I took the opportunity to make this episode of the radio show with guests Aaron Cole, Merll Truesdale and Kenny Post, music by B.B. King, Eddie Burns, Jimmy Reed, Magic Sam, John Sinclair & Harmonica Shah, Yusef Lateef, and Fela Kuti, plus a “live” performance by Kenny Post and the original version of my anthem “It’s All Good” composed for the Cannabis Cup 1998 and recorded in New York City with Fluxedo Junction on arrangement & rhythm and Jeff Grand added in Detroit on slide guitar.

The John Sinclair Radio Show celebrated its 4th anniversary at the Cannabis College on the Monday afternoon of the 21st Cannabis Cup and the 10th birthday of the Cannabis College itself. Our stone regulars were on hand to celebrate our own annual reunion: Adam Brook, Kenny Post, Merll Truesdale, Jim Epstein, and Walter Noons, who never made it on the air. The music is another all-Detroit program featuring recordings by Harmonica Shah, Scott Morgan & Guardian Angel, the Detroit Cobras, Bettye Lavette, Odessa Harris, Nathaniel Mayer, Joe L., Andre Williams, and Eddie Burns, plus a “live” performance by Kenny Post, a cut from my DETROIT LIFE album, and the number that was the first thing we played on our very first program four years ago: “It’s All Good” with LangeFrans & Baas B..

 Megaplaten, gigantic record show

On this cold, rainy Saturday in Amsterdam Adam Brook and I took the train to Utrecht for this winter’s edition of the gigantic record show called Megaplaten, where I was scheduled to spin an hour of music into the exposition hall and then make our annual Megaplaten episode of the radio show. The DJ set was splendid, but none of the exhibitors were coming up to talk with us, so I decided to go back to the city and cut the show at the 420 Café and edit in into the set of music from Utrecht. Nick Smith & Guiseppe are in from London and Jeff Kabik stopped by to spray me with some new cannabis delivery system. The music is all from Detroit with Johnnie Bassett, Hank Ballard & the Midnighters, the young Bob Seger, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Alberta Adams, Barbara Lewis, Joe Weaver, Marvin Gaye, Bob Seeley & Bob Baldori. Was (Not Was), Thornetta Davis, Todd Rhodes & Connie Allen, and Scott Morgan & PowerTrane “live” at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac MI on the recent Zenta New Year celebration.

One of our favorite venues for the radio program is backstage at the Paradiso in Amsterdam where we have our own special little space to do our broadcasts from. This time we met and talked with Wayne Kramer & Michael Davis from the MC5 before their show with DKT/MC5 went on stage, and also spoke with the great vocalist Lisa Kekaula, who joins Mark Arm in singing lead with DKT (Davis-Kramer-Thompson) on the classic works of the MC5. There’s recorded music from the MC5 archives and some things I cut with the Blues Scholars featuring Wayne Kramer in the 1990s.

Everything went beautifully, from the theme music provided by Walter Noon’s guitar, the Opening Tokes of John Sinclair weed from the Dampkring, a tune from Walter, a conversation with Merll Truesdale of Columbia SC, a visit from Sidney Daniels of Ceres Seeds celebrating his Silver Cup victory, a song by Tim Pate and our collaboration on my poem Friday the 13th, a talkl with Don E. Wirtshafter and SuperDude, and a conversation, a couple of tunes and closing theme music from Kenny Post.

Adam Brook and I have released the album as a Big Chief Product (CD-0008) and Mark and I have been playing dates in Italy and Amsterdam to support its release. Here’s what it sounded like on Thanksgiving night.

My last episode to be recorded in America this time was made at a hip little coffeehouse in Ypsilanti, Michigan called Bombadill’s. Tom Silvia set up the hit with Griff of Ann Arbor Alive Radio (a3radio.com) and backed me up on guitar and vocals. At Tom’s request we attacked the second Book, “Country Blues,” of my elongated work in verse called Fattening Frogs For Snakes. Tom provided the music and the occasional vocal, inserting some of his own blues compositions into the mix and performing admirably throughout. We talked about the blues and the bluesmen in between selections and had a natural ball, ending up with Griff grilling me for about 15 minutes after the performance, which totaled just about 100 minutes.

The 4th Annual John Sinclair 420 Party.

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 @ 7:30-8:30 pm [20-0811]

I was having dinner at the Butchers Inn at Eastern Market in Detroit with my daughter Sunny and her daughter Beyonce when we were joined by my pal Fritz Kielsmeier from Chicago, Adam Brook, my beloved host Holice P. Wood, the great Detroit poster artist Gary Grimshaw, and filmmaker Tony Brancaleone, whose movie A Detroit Thing has just been released. When Tony started questioning Grimshaw about what he was doing I pulled out my little Olympus 320M digital recorder and started documenting the occasion, and when I got back to Hollywood’s place I added some great Detroit music from the 420 All Star Band, Joe Weaver, Harmonica Shah, Johnnie Bassett with Larry McCray, John Sinclair & His Motor City Blues Scholars with James McCarty, and Thornetta Davis, most of it taken from the Holice P. Wood productions in 2005-06-07 called John Sinclair’s 420 Music & Art Festival, and recorded and assembled by Mike Boulan at No Cover Records.
