Plenty of classical Crescent City music too.

RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

An Allen Toussaint Special

My friend Phil Demetrion in Paris sent me an incredible radio program by Harry Shearer where he spent almost an hour talking with the great Allen Toussaint about his life in music in New Orleans and even got Toussaint to offer a few keyboard illustrations. I excerpted about half an hour of Harry’s program and mixed it with recordings produced and often written by Allen Toussaint, including Toussaint himself, Chris Kenner, Al Hirt, Jessie Hill, Ernie K-Doe, the Stokes, Lee Dorsey, the Meters and Dr. John, plus a fine reading of “Lipstick Traces” by Snooks Eaglin, Toussaint’s teen-age bandmate in a New Orleans band called the Flamingos.

Special Guest: Stanton Moore of Galactic

Larry Hayden and I were getting ready to Eat at Jo’s following the recording of episode #192 this Wednesday evening when Stanton Moore, drummer with the New Orleans band called Galactic, walked in for dinner prior to Galactic’s show at the Melkweg later tonight. I grabbed his copy of the new Galactic album, From the Corner to the Block, and stuffed some tunes into our playlist, along with some classic Crescent City R&B sides produced by Allen Toussaint on Curley Moore, Diamond Joe, Benny Spellman, Earl King and Lee Dorsey. We enjoyed some fine conversation and a great New Orleans reunion right here at Eat at Jo‘s, but neither of us could name the artist on the splendid opening cut I picked up while listening to Tom Morgan’s New Orleans Music Show on WWOZ during Mardi Gras 2008. The closing cut, though, is a well-known number done by the New Birth Brass Band from the 6th Ward
