The John Sinclair Foundation Presents
SINCLAIR ON THE AIR 63
Vintage Radio Vaults 19: Red Prysock at the Mardi Gras
Salto Wereld Radio-99.4 FM, Cable-104.6, Amsterdam
Broadcast: Sunday, July 4, 2010 @ 1:00 am [SW-0063]

Sinclair On The Air 63 <– Listen On Demand

This special edition of the Blue Sensations program with John Sinclair was produced as part of the Spring 1990 Fund Drive at WDET-FM in Detroit with Martin Gross riding shotgun and has been edited of everything but the main thesis of the show: RED PRYSOCK INVADES NEW ORLEANS, pitting the great rock & roll tenor saxophonist against an all-star Crescent City line-up including Roy Montrell, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, The Meters, Roy Brown, Clifton Chenier, Larry Williams, and Little Richard in a simulated free-for-all boxing match at the Superdome in New Orleans that results in an inevitable victory for the John Coltrane of Rock & Roll—Red Prysock! The original cassette recording was duplicated 20 years ago and then digitally transferred from the poor duplicate to make the nasty soundtrack we have in hand, but it’s the only way we’ll ever hear it. The Sinclair On The Air show is heard every Saturday night at midnight over Salto Wereld Radio-99.4 FM and Cable 104.6 as a service of Radio Free Amsterdam.

Sinclair On The Air 42 – Listen On Demand!

Tonight’s program of music from the Bohemian National Home in Detroit features the music of Sonny Rollins, the great tenor saxophonist who has just been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences—a rare accolade for an African American jazz improvisor but certainly more than fitting. Accordingly, we’ll be listening to some of the historic recordings of Sonny Rollins, leading his own quartets and in collaboration with Thelonious Monk, plus we’ll hear two more cuts from my current recording project with the Planet D Nonet called VIPER MADNESS that sets the statements of Mezz Mezzrow & Louis Armstrong about their initial meetings & subsequent adventures with marijuana to music of the 1920s & ’30s. The Sinclair On The Air show is broadcasting tonight from the Bohemian National Home in Detroit and is heard every Saturday night at midnight over Salto Wereld Radio-99.4 FM and Cable 104.6 as a service of Radio Free Amsterdam.

Sinclair On The Air 40 – Listen on demand

Tonight’s program of music from Detroit features the 9-piece swing band known as Planet D, led by drummer R.J. Spangler & trumpet man James O’Donnell—both, incidentally, original members of John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars back in 1983. We’re recording an album called VIPER MADNESS that sets the statements of Mezz Mezzrow & Louis Armstrong about their initial meetings & subsequent adventures with marijuana to music of the 1920s & ’30s. One of these cuts is included, a pair from the Planet D album Blowin’ Away the Blues, and music from the Detroit Cobras, Robert Lowe, Stevie Wonder, Wendell Harrison & Tribe, Alberta Adams, Eddie Burns, Bobo Jenkins, LC Green & Sam Kelly, Johnny Howard, Calvin Frazier, Scott Morgan & PowerTrane, and Andre Williams & Green Hornet “live’ in Holland. The Sinclair On The Air show is broadcasting tonight from the THANK YOU GARY GRIMSHAW benefit concert at the Bohemian National Home in Detroit and is heard every Saturday night at midnight over Salto Wereld Radio-99.4 FM and Cable 104.6 as a service of Radio Free Amsterdam.
