Detroit, mi

I’m comfortably ensconced in the suite of the Poet in Residence at the Bohemian National Home in Detroit, it’s a frigid Thursday evening in the Motor City and I’ve got a busy weekend coming up, so I want to get this episode ready to roll next Monday at 4:20 before things get too frantic around here. I had to leave out from last week’s program from The Foundry in London a long and interesting conversation with artist & activist Yodet Gherez, and I’m going to put it in the mix along with music by the Lyman Woodard Organization, Howard Glazer, Emanuel Young with the EL34s, Bo Diddley, Super Chikan, Thelonious Monk, Ras Kente & the Take No Prisoners Posse, John Sinclair & His Motor City Blues Scholars, and the legendary Detroit Contemporary 5, recorded in concert in Lansing, Michigan on November 29, 1964.

Radio Free Genoa Poetry

The initial episode of Radio Free Genoa Poetry was broadcast “live” from the Piazza delle Erbe in the heart of Genoa where my engineer and recordist Andrea Orlando and I set up outside the Café Letterario delle Erbe to play some music and talk some talk from the Festivale Internazionale di Poesie di Genova. Our opening number, “Moanin’,” from the great Blues & Roots album by Charles Mingus, goes out to my friend Soul Lucille at CONTRA Radio in Firenze and to my host Paolo Podesta in Genoa, who has two versions of the tune as ringtones on his mobile telefono. The music continues with selections by Alberta Adams, John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars, Andre Williams, Afrissippi, Billie Holiday, Bob Marley & the Wailers, the recently departed Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Ben Harper with the Skatalites, and Bobby Patterson.

RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

George Clinton “Live” in London

The Great Originator Ellas McDaniel, professionally known as Bo Diddley, became one of the founders of rock & roll music when Checker Records released his first single, “Bo Diddley” b/w “I’m a Man” in 1955. Born in McComb, Mississippi in 19__ and raised in Chicago from the age of 6, Bo passed away on June 2 at his home in Archer, Florida at the age of 79. This episode celebrates the life & music of Bo Diddley and fellow pioneers Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Fats Domino—the Mount Rushmore of Rock & Roll—who reshaped the sound of popular music in 1955 with their smash releases on Chess, Checker, Specialty & Imperial Records. We also bow our heads to some of their illustrious progenitors from the Crescent City: Roy Brown, Professor Longhair, Lloyd Price and Bobby Charles. But it’s mostly Bo Diddley all the way.
