Amsterdam, NL.

Finally! I met Henk Botwinik at Larry Hayden’s new headquarters at Café The Zen in the east and the three of us teamed up to make this commemorative episode of our radio show—just like old times. Tonight we celebrated the moon landing of 40 years ago with music from Roland Kirk with the Roy Haynes Quartet, Chuck Berry, Clarence “Bon Ton” Garlow, Li’l Bob & the Lollipops, the Li’l Rascals Brass Band, Isaac Hayes, Muddy Waters, Marvin Gaye, Archie Shepp, Thelonious Monk, and Jr. Walker & the All Stars. We had a ball getting back together and previewing the relaunch of Radio Free Amsterdam, our redesigned website and the projected podcast of the last 30 programs in this series (#244-273), one a day for the next month. I’ve been making the shows but they haven’t been posted yet, so with Larry’s help we’ll get them into play, and Henk is already streaming them on the Radio Free Amsterdam “live” stream. In the immortal words of Jr. Walker: Right On Brothers & Sisters!

RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

Ooze Charm Coffeeshop, Tokyo > HeadPress Bunker, London

This episode is centered on a long conversation I had with the Japanese writer, musician, & punk rock legend Gaku Torii at a place called the Ooze Charm Coffeeshop in Tokyo in the evening of Friday, June 27, 2008. The excerpts in this episode are taken from the first section of the conversation and punctuated with music by Big Joe Turner, Chuck Berry, Billy Ward & the Dominos, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra & His Arkestra, John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars with Wayne Kramer, and the MC-5 from the Grande Ballroom in 1968—sort of an aural biography of my youthful years (Part 1) produced in my little room at the HeadPress Bunker in London on the last day of August, 2008. Gaku’s interview has just appeared in print in the Japanese periodical Record Collectors’ Magazine (Volume 27, Number 9, 2008).

The Great Originator Ellas McDaniel, professionally known as Bo Diddley, became one of the founders of rock & roll music when Checker Records released his first single, “Bo Diddley” b/w “I’m a Man” in 1955. Born in McComb, Mississippi in 19__ and raised in Chicago from the age of 6, Bo passed away on June 2 at his home in Archer, Florida at the age of 79. This episode celebrates the life & music of Bo Diddley and fellow pioneers Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Fats Domino—the Mount Rushmore of Rock & Roll—who reshaped the sound of popular music in 1955 with their smash releases on Chess, Checker, Specialty & Imperial Records. We also bow our heads to some of their illustrious progenitors from the Crescent City: Roy Brown, Professor Longhair, Lloyd Price and Bobby Charles. But it’s mostly Bo Diddley all the way.

RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY
