RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

Genoa, Italy

The second episode of Radio Free Genoa Poetry is beaming out from the Piazza delle Erbe in the heart of Genoa, just outsidethe Piazza delle Erbe, where we gathered to play some music and talk some talk from the Festivale Internazionale di Poesie di Genova, including a conversation with Festival Director Claudio Pozzani. In honor of tonight’s award ceremony, Poesia en Bottaglia, we played party and drinking music by Huey “Piano” Smith & His Clowns, Stevie Wonder, Blue Lu Barker, Allen Toussaint, Chuck Berry, Dave Bartholomew, Little Walter & Baby Face Leroy, Percy Mayfield, Taylor Grocery Band, Paul Butterfield’s Better Days, and Earl King.
RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

This program was recorded in New Orleans at Mardi Gras time with David Kunian on the Kitchen Sink Show, but one of the WWOZ CD turntables wasn’t recording and there were a lot of blank spaces in the master recording as a result. But I e-mailed the fragments to Henk Botwinik in Amsterdam and he pieced the some of the fragments together for episode #101.and I finished the job months later in Amsterdam to complete the program. There’s music by Earl King, Olu Dara, Big Chief Monk Boudreau, the Wild Tchoupitoulas, Dave Bartholomew, the Dixie Cups, the Black Eagles, and the Wild Magnolias.

Composite Mardi Gras show [20-0703]

In a fit of obsessive compulsion one day I decided to trim down to one hour each my several New Orleans Mardi Gras shows on WWOZ with Tom Morgan and David Kunian (episodes #75, 76, 77, 123, and the unissued #20-0703) and assemble this new episode from the excised material. The result is basically a full-scale Mardi Gras Indian Special conducted by Tom Morgan and myself, with recordings by Dave Bartholomew, the Wild Magnolias with the White Eagles, the Guardians of the Flame and the Young Guardians of the Flame, plus cuts by Lee Dorsey, Jessie Hill and Kermit Ruffins, excerpts from Royce Osborne’s interviews with Big Chief Tootie Montana, and a reading from my essay “They Call Us Wild!”
