Producer David Kunian presents a vibrant sound portrait of the legendary Dew Drop Inn and its musical heyday from the 1940s to the end of the 1960s, drawing on the narration of Chuck Siler and oral testimony from Ray Charles, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Earl King and dozens of musical luminaries who made the Dew Drop their home in uptown New Orleans. Plenty of classical Crescent City music too.

Sunday, February 13, 2011 @ 11:00-12:00 am [20-1107]
Eck en Weil, NL.

I’m broadcasting this Sunday morning from a venerable farm house called Villazomerlust in the tiny village of Eck en Weil, about an hour’s drive from Amsterdam, the home of Philippe Pfeiffer, my host & bandleader for last night’s concert at the Divina Commedia in the village of Maurik, Holland and my special guest for this program of music from New Orleans, London & the Netherlands including a pair of cuts from Dr. John & Donald Harrison as well as the Doctor’s beautiful reading of “Indian Red”; a new version of “History 101” by John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars with Elliott Levin on tenor saxophone and text by Charles Neville, recorded at the Obama Inauguration Day party in 2009 at the Café Oto in London; a prime collaboration between Trombone Shorty & Big Chief Peppy of the Golden Arrows; a set of original Dutch blues songs by Philippe’s band, J. Palthe & Friends from their albums A Good Reason and It’s Blues Time; a commentary on village life by Sonny Boy Williamson; and a musical valentine in the form of a brand new recording from the Studio Zen sessions of the International Blues Scholars with Vincente Pino on guitar. Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody!

Sinclair on The Air is beaming out from the guest apartment above the Hash Marihuana and Hemp Museum on the Achterburgwal canal in Amsterdam where I’m in residence this week and still looking ahead to Mardi Gras in New Orleans with music by Deacon John, the 6th Ward Big Shots with James Andrews & his brother Trombone Shorty, the Bayou Renegades, 101 Runners with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the New Orleans Nightcrawlers with Big Chief Smiley Ricks, Barry Kaiser & Chris Polachek, Walter “Wolfman” Washington & the Roadmasters, and Dr. John with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, plus a long cut from the recording sessions I made in London last week with the aggregation I call John Sinclair & Beatnik Youth, and a new Radio Edit of the International Blues Scholars on “We Love Big Chief” from the LET’S GO GET ‘EM album forthcoming from Mo-Sound Records in Detroit. The Sinclair On The Air show on Saturday nights from midnight to 2:00 am on Salto Wereld Radio-99.4 FM is now off the air until further notice and can be heard here on Radio Free Amsterdam and on Detroit Life Radio every Sunday at 4:20.

Amsterdam, NL.

Our sixth Cannabis Cup 2010 episode is coming from the Hemp Works on the Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam Centruum and we’re talking with Adam Dunn, the proprietor of Hemp Works and THC Seeds who lived almost 20 years in Amsterdam before returning to America this year and affiliating with the Mayflower dispensary in Denver, Colorado. Adam wanted to hear something by his friend Dr. John, so I decided to feature the music of my personal physician throughout the entire program. Good idea!

Tom Morgan is an award-winning jazz historian and community broadcaster usually heard on WWOZ-FM in New Orleans. Recently Tom was unjustly suspended from the air after being attacked in the studio at shift change by another deejay. While Tom’s off the air in New Orleans we have decided to double his airtime on Radio Free Amsterdam and will be running his New Orleans Music Show archives every Tuesday and his Jazz Roots show every Wednesday this fall until he is reinstated
Our second episode from Tom Morgan’s New Year’s Day celebration on the Tuesday New Orleans Music Show from WWOZ-FM focuses on the Crescent City’s incredibly rich piano tradition with selections by Ellis Marsalis, Henry Butler, Jonathan Batiste, Willie Tee, Jesse McBride, Dr. John, Harry Connick Jr, Art Neville, Joe Krown, John Autin, James Booker, Marcia Ball, and Davell Crawford:
