Our Radio Free Amsterdam krewe returned to The Dolphins after a prolonged absence to make a show featuring ‘live’ music by Massachusetts bluesman Jon Short, whom I’d met last month when we shared the bill at several little blues festivals in Italy. He was resting up in Amsterdam before returning to the States and we took advantage of him with several of his numbers and a duet with the poet recorded in the lower lounge area of the coffeeshop. Radouane helped us with the Opening Tokes, and we heard records by the ReBirth Brass Band, Roy Brown, Professor Longhair, Smiley Lewis, John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars, Andre Williams, James Andrews, and Irma Thomas.

Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at 1:30-2:30 am

I went to London for a few days at the behest of my distributors at Turnaround to promote my new edition of GUITAR ARMY and ended up Monday afternoon at the underground headquarters of HeadPress publications to do an interview with David Kerekes. David, Dylan Harding and Lisa Stanton took me out to dinner at a nearby North End pub and then back to the Bunker, as they call their well-secured workspace, to get high, listen to records and, as it turned out, to make an episode of the John Sinclair Radio Show right there on the spot. We talked a bit and played music from the house collection, including sides by John Coltrane , Son House, Charles Mingus, the Staple Singers, Deodato, Funkadelic, James Brown, Nick Drake, Miles Davis, and Sly & the Family Stone.

Milano, Italy.

The COX 18 Free Festival in Milano is staged this year on the spacious grounds of a former Catholic psychiatric facility that’s been converted into an experimental arts complex now known as Museo Arte Paolo Pini. COX 18 Press is about to bring out an Italian translation of my blues work titled THE DELTA SOUND, with the CD produced by Andre Williams glued in the back, and they’ve named the festival after my poem “We Just Change the Beat”—or in Italian, abbiamo solo cambiato il ritmo. My translator, Guiseppe “Pippo” Pipitone, and Marco Lorenzin conducted an interview about the book on the grounds of the Paolo Pini on Saturday evening with my guitarist Mark Ritsema chiming in from time to time, I recorded it on my little digital machine and, when I got to Rome, edited it together with some cuts from THE DELTA SOUND to make this program. That’s Jeff “Baby” Grand and Everette Eglin on lead & slide guitars, Bill Lynn on rhythm guitar, “Tricky Dick” Dixon or Mark Bingham on bass, Michael Voelker on drums, and the ladies from ELS on backing vocals with arrangements by the great Andre Williams.

Tuesday, December 5, 2006 @ 8:15-9:15 pm
Paradiso, Amsterdam

One of our favorite venues for the radio program is backstage at the Paradiso in Amsterdam where we have our own special little space to do our broadcasts from. This time we met and talked with Wayne Kramer & Michael Davis from the MC5 before their show with DKT/MC5 went on stage, and also spoke with the great vocalist Lisa Kekaula, who joins Mark Arm in singing lead with DKT (Davis-Kramer-Thompson) on the classic works of the MC5. There’s recorded music from the MC5 archives and some things I cut with the Blues Scholars featuring Wayne Kramer in the 1990s.
