An Hour with Your Ace from Inner Space

The John Sinclair Foundation Presents
Detroit radio legend Ernie Durham—The Frantic One, retired from years of service to WJLB Radio, initiated a new program series at WDET-FM, Public Radio in Detroit, on Saturday, July 7, 1991, replacing the Blue Sensations show produced by John Sinclair every Saturday night from midnight to 2:00 am, immediately preceding Blues & Music After Hours with Famous Coachman. A box of cassettes containing the first 20 Ernie Durham shows on WDET was discovered in 2009 by Frank Bach in his garage on the east side of Detroit and the tapes were digitally transferred and edited for broadcast by John Sinclair for Radio Free Amsterdam and Detroit Life Radio. Here’s an hour of the first show…more to follow!
This episode is the second hour of The Frantic One’s Soul-dies Music Plus program on WDET-FM in Detroit for Saturday night, July 28, 1991 and features the inimitable delivery of Ernie Durham and music by Cal Tjader, Big Joe Turner, Quincy Jones, Roy Hamilton, Brook Benton, Little Walter, Ray Charles, Jesse Belvin, Aretha Frankln, Funkadelic, and Stevie Wonder.

Detroit, Michigan.

Last night we threw a big party called THANK YOU GARY GRIMSHAW at the Bohemian National Home in honor and appreciation of the great Detroit artist Gary Grimshaw, creator since 1966 of magnificent posters and other art works centered on the music and culture of the Motor City. Included was a poetry reading dedicated to the great Mick Vranich, one of the city’s finest poets for many years who just passed away last week, with appearances by James Semark, Ken Mikolowski, Bill Harris, Dennis Teichman and Pun Plamondon, and music from the Planet D Nonet, the Howling Diablos, Howard Glazer & the El-34s, and Ras Kente & the Take No Prisoners Posse. I’m continuing the celebration today with the 320th episode of my radio show, featuring music by Planet D, Louis Armstrong, Howard Glazer & the El-34s, Funkadelic, the Brothers Groove, Ras Kente, Marcus Belgrave & Tribe, and the Pinkeye Orchestra with a selection from their brand-new album release, Live: Deathless, plus a pair of cuts from my current album project with Planet D called VIPER MADNESS, recorded by Mike Boulan last Monday at his Straight Ahead Studio in Oak Park. Look up Gary Grimshaw on the World Wide Web—you’ll be glad you did.

Tuesday, January 1, 2008 @ 6:30-7:30 pm[20-0801]

It’s New Year’s Day
and I’m celebrating by myself with a coffee and a smoke and listening to some really hip music I’ve cued up for my next radio show when it occurs to me to make the show right here by myself with my little digital recorder and my iTunes and my Audacity editor. They were made by Sam & the Soul Machine, Joe Weaver & the Blue Notes, the Fabulous Peps, Lee Rogers, Don Bryant, the Detroit Cobras, Chuck Carbo, John Sinclair & Mark Ritsema, Charles Neville & Diversity, Dr. John, Kermit Ruffins, Ike Turner & the Kings Of Rhythm, Funkadelic, Oliver Nelson, John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars “live” at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux & the Golden Eagles.

Headpress Bunker, London -
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at 1:30-2:30 am

I went to London for a few days at the behest of my distributors at Turnaround to promote my new edition of GUITAR ARMY and ended up Monday afternoon at the underground headquarters of HeadPress publications to do an interview with David Kerekes. David, Dylan Harding and Lisa Stanton took me out to dinner at a nearby North End pub and then back to the Bunker, as they call their well-secured workspace, to get high, listen to records and, as it turned out, to make an episode of the John Sinclair Radio Show right there on the spot. We talked a bit and played music from the house collection, including sides by John Coltrane , Son House, Charles Mingus, the Staple Singers, Deodato, Funkadelic, James Brown, Nick Drake, Miles Davis, and Sly & the Family Stone.
