Amsterdam, nl.

My annual Bill Barth Memorial Concert at the 420 Café took place this year on the night before American Thanksgiving and constitutes the sixth of our Cannabis Cup 2009 broadcasts celebrating of the Fifth Anniversary of the John Sinclair Radio Show since we launched this project at Coffeeshop Amnesia on November 22, 2004. Bill Barth, a guitarist, blues scholar and hashish entrepreneur from Memphis who spent his last 25 years as a resident of Amsterdam, first played music with me at the Cannabis Cup in 1999 and the following year we inaugurated the 420 Thanksgiving concert and continued until Bill’s untimely demise a couple of years later. The show starts with a brisk set by Kenny Post, followed by an impromptu appearance by Los Marijuanos and a closing set by guitarist Mark Ritsema & myself. Happy Thanksgiving!

I flew from Amsterdam to Madrid on April 2nd with Mark Ritsema, my splendid guitarist and musical partner from Rotterdam, and we trained down to the ancient city of Cordoba to take part in the Exploradores presentation at the CosmoPoetica Festival, where we performed on-stage at the Sala Orive with Spanish translations of the poems in our program from our album criss cross projected on a screen behind us. The concert selections are complemented here by excerpts from my interview with a reporter from Il Pubblico newspaper conducted in the lounge of the Hotel Alfaros on the afternoon of the show. The closing selection is taken from the criss cross album.

IT’S ALL GOOD: A John Sinclair Reader.

This episode of the radio show features my complete performance at the Bamalama Poster Shop in London on Wednesday, November 12, celebrating the release of Headpress 28 and the publication of my new HeadPress book, IT’S ALL GOOD.: A John Sinclair Reader. There’s music in duet with Jair-Rohm Parker Wells on electric bass [01]-[07], we’re joined on selection [08] by some hard-core London blues characters, and they finish out the evening with me [09]-[11] in the absence of Jair-Rohm, who took a much-deserved break on the final set. The final selection is with Mark Ritsema & jair-Rohm Wells, recorded at Rough Trade Records on Monday, November 10.

IT’S ALL GOOD: A John Sinclair Reader.

This joyous return to the Café Oto in London’s Dalston neighborhood was organized by Dylan Harding for HeadPress to celebrate the release of my new book, IT’S ALL GOOD: A John Sinclair Reader, with an introduction by Mark Ritsema, and the publication of Headpress 28 which I had the honor of serving as editor alongside Headpress founder David Kerekes. My publishers brought Mark Ritsema over from Rotterdam to play guitar and Jair-Rohm Parker Wells down from Sweden to play bass, and we were joined by members of the London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO) in various combinations as this splendid evening of music & verse unfolded. We performed poems from IT’S ALL GOOD, a voice & piano duet on “nutty” and the premiere musical performance of a new poem written last week for my late brother David called “little rootie tootie.”

Our traditional Thanksgiving show at the 420 Café this year is a “live” performance by Mark Ritsema and myself presented in its entirety as the 5th episode of our 2006 Cannabis Cup coverage. Mark & I have just released our new CD, cross cross, a selection of poems from my book of monk that was set to music by Mark Ritsema and recorded with his guitar by Clay Windham at Easter Hill Studios in Holendrecht on the first two days of 2005. Adam Brook and I have released the album as a Big Chief Product (CD-0008) and Mark and I have been playing dates in Italy and Amsterdam to support its release. Here’s what it sounded like on Thanksgiving night.

During my visit to Tuscany to perform with Mark Ritsema at the Quatro Festival Internazionale della Letteratura Resistente and celebrate the publication of my book VA TUTTO BENE / IT’S ALL GOOD in the Italian translation by Alberto Prunetti for Stampa Alternativa, I got the opportunity to record an episode of my radio show with the help of Vito Laterza at the Stampa Alternativa bookstore in Pitigliano. The entire show was made “live,” including music by Mark Ritsema, conversation and poetry by the great John Giorno, and Mark Ritsema and myself performing some poems from VA TUTTO BENE.

My first radio episode after returning to Amsterdam for the spring incorporates a “live” performance by Mark Ritsema and myself at Eat at Jo’s in the Melkweg this Sunday afternoon with a number of selections in rough mix form from my new recording just made in the Motor City last month, THE DETROIT ALBUM, featuring Lyman Woodard or Phil Hale on keyboards, Ms. Thornetta Davis on backing vocals, Jeff “Baby” Grand on guitar, Chris Rumel or Ibraheem Jones on bass, Tino Gross or Milton Hale on drums, Johnny Evans on tenor sax, James O’Donnell on trumpet, John “T-Bone” Paxton on trombone, Rick Steiger on baritone sax and, from a “live” recording at Cobb’s Corner in 1979, the Lyman Woodard Organization backing my closing number for Henry Normile called “My Buddy.” That’s Henry’s voice introducing and closing the final track, recorded in January 1979 the day before he was murdered next door to Cobb’s Corner in the middle of our recording sessions for Lyman’s album Don’t Stop the Groove.

Fantasio, one of Amsterdam’s original modern music venues that opened just one day before the Paradiso came into play about 35 years ago, has just re-established itself in the building that houses the National Pop Institute on the Prins Hendrikskade just east of the Centraal Station. On this Friday night producer Jules Otto is throwing a CD release party at Fantasio for Mark Ritsema’s new album project, Night Porter, and Larry Hayden and I feel right at home as we play some numbers from Mark’s Night Porter album and listen to several numbers I’ve recorded with Mark (from our duet album criss cross) and with his band Raskolnikov, plus fine recorded music from the James Brown Orchestra, Smiley Lewis, the ReBirth Brass Band, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, John Coltrane, and the Dutch rock band Alquin.

Mark Ritsema and I were invited to return to the Festival Internationale della Letteratura Resistente in Tuscany this year, where we would celebrate the release by Stampa Alternativa of my book GUITAR ARMY in the Italian translation by Alberto Prunetti and stage the World Premiere screening of TWENTY TO LIFE: The Life & Times of John Sinclair, finally completed after 16 years in the making, with the filmmaker, Steve Gebhardt, also on hand to join the festivities. Our friend Vito Laterza, in the middle of two years of post-graduate studies in Swaziland, Africa, flew in for the event and conducted the formal presentation of GUITAR ARMY at the Libri Stampa Alternativa, then accompanied us back to our superb lodgings at Fabio’s B & B Il Pittolo. to produce this episode of my radio show with live music by Mark Ritsema and trumpeter Angelo Olivieri, a long conversation with Steve Gebhardt about the movie, and some discussion with Pitigliano resident Angelo Olivieri.

Thanksgiving/Cannabis Cup Show from Cafe 420
Thursday, November 23, 2006 @ 7:45-8:45 pm
