I met Ivor Kallin when I performed with the London Improvisers Orchestra at the Café Oto last fall. When I got to London this time, he invited me to guest on his Resonance Radio program, the Ambrosia Rasputin Show. Most of the hour-long program is incorporated herein, including a pair of elongated conversations, the John Sinclair & Pinkeye recording of “Smells Like Sulfur Here” and the MC-5 “live” at the Saginaw Civic Center on New Year’s Day 1970. Ivor and I perform a duet with his violin and my poem “april in paris,” and this episode of my show closes with the first half of Robbie Knight’s videocast, Longcat Weekly 136, a duet with Robbie and myself on my poem “Fat Boy,” recorded at Longcat Studio in Turnpike Lane on January 21, 2009.

RADIO FREE GENOA POETRY

One of our favorite venues for the radio program is backstage at the Paradiso in Amsterdam where we have our own special little space to do our broadcasts from. This time we met and talked with Wayne Kramer & Michael Davis from the MC5 before their show with DKT/MC5 went on stage, and also spoke with the great vocalist Lisa Kekaula, who joins Mark Arm in singing lead with DKT (Davis-Kramer-Thompson) on the classic works of the MC5. There’s recorded music from the MC5 archives and some things I cut with the Blues Scholars featuring Wayne Kramer in the 1990s.

This episode is the second program centered on a long conversation I had with the Japanese writer, musician, & punk rock legend Gaku Torii at a place called the Ooze Charm Coffeeshop in Tokyo in the evening of Friday, June 27, 2008. The excerpts in this episode are taken from the second section of the conversation and punctuated with recordings by the Motor City Blues Scholars, Jack Kerouac & Steve Allen, Miles Davis & John Coltrane, the MC-5, P&J Review Band, Bobby Seale, the Watts Prophets, Mitch Ryder & Detroit, and John Sinclair & the Pinkeye Orchestra recorded “live” at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit in July 2008—sort of an aural biography of my youthful years (Part 2) produced in my little room at the HeadPress Bunker in London on the first and second days of September, 2008. Gaku’s interview has just appeared in print in the Japanese periodical Record Collectors’ Magazine (Volume 27, Number 9, 2008).

Wayne Kramer was in London in June when the MC5 played with Social Distortion at Royal Festival Hall,

and we got together the Sunday afternoon before the gig at Wayne’s hotel, the City Inn, to have dinner and talk about Sun Ra for a forthcoming issue of HeadPress magazine. This episode features excerpts from the recording of our conversation and lots of music by Sun Ra & His Arkestra, including performances from the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festivals in 1972 and 1973.

I spent June 4-9 in Paris as a guest of the Filmer de Musique 2 film festival at a funky arts center called Point Ephemere under the careful sponsorship of my friend Marc Zermati, long-time French cultural warrior and proprietor of SkyDog Records. He arranged my Friday evening concert at Point Ephemere with an exceptional guitarist named Gilles and, two days later, a recording session with Gilles in a proper studio near the Arc de Triomphe known as Starski & Sons. On Monday afternoon before leaving for Charles deGaulle Airport Marc had Gilles, Olivier from Filmer de Musique, and our dear friend Philippe LeBras of SkyRanch Records over to his place in the 10th Arondissment to hang out together, get high and listen to some music. I took advantage of the occasion and set out my little digital recorder to capture our conversation for my radio show, featuring music from Nawfel produced by P. LeBras, selections from a rare Don Covay album reissued by SkyRanch in the early 1990s, and several tracks from Gilles & myself recorded at Starski & Sons Studio the day before. The closing cut, Nawfel’s “Too Mancini,” goes out to my friend Soul Lucille in Firenze.

Sunday, July 31, 2006 @ 8:30-9:45 pm [20-0628]

This Sunday evening Jim Epstein drove me over to Oakland to a little house on a residential street where the LuveR.com multi-media compound headed by the great Frank Moore is based. Frank Moore is an incredible human being who has overcome loss of limbs and speech to rule as a sex counselor, performing artist and media mogul with community radio and television shows beaming out almost continuously from LuveR.com. Frank conducts his conversations with the help of an interpreter who translates his tappings on sort of an ouija board of language. He carried on quite a lively conversation and later I dubbed in recordings by Detroit featuring Mitch Ryder, the Rationals, MC5, John Lennon, John Sinclair & Wayne Kramer, and Uprising.
