I met Charles Shaar Murray, the great British music journalist and author of books on Jimi Hendrix and John Lee Hooker, when he interviewed me in late January for a story in the Sunday Times of London. In the course of our conversation Charles picked up Nick Smith’s guitar and starting playing and then singing some very tasty blues. I joined in with a couple of poems and we had a good thing going on, so in April we combined for some gigs as a duo (or trio with Buffalo Bill Smith on harmonica or Gary Lammin on second guitar) and then made a rehearsal at Scream Studios in Croyden with Charles’ rhythm section, Dee on bass and Jo-Jo on drums, fondly known as the Queens of Funk. This episode combines recordings from our performance at Ray’s Jazz in London on April 8 with Buffalo Bill and the rehearsal in Croyden on April 13.

I arrived in Amsterdam by train from London on St. Patrick’s Day evening just in time to meet a pair of brilliant young women named Monika Berenyi and Cecilia Costa who are heading up a Dutch art project centered on an intensive investigation into the poetry of Detroit made during 1960-1975 and its roots in the urban environment of the Motor City. Their group of 15 students is about to leave for its residency in Detroit to conduct serious research and record oral histories with many of the poets who made Detroit City Poetry what is was and is. My testimony at the 420 Café constituted their first interview and provides the text for this episode of the radio show, complemented by Motor City music from Martha & the Vandellas, John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars, Joe L., Lyman Woodard & the Artists Workshop Music Ensemble, and the MC-5.

On the second Thursday in February I had the honor of appearing as a guest on the greatest “live” radio show in the world, Thacker Mountain Radio, produced on-stage this week at the Lyric Theatre in Oxford, Mississippi, hosted by Jim Dees, and anchored by the house band, the Yalobushwhackers, featuring Jim Dickinson on piano, Duff Dorough on guitar, Slade at the bass and Wallace Lester on drums. Jim’s other guests were Alicia Romano & Dirty Flowers and the local heroes known as the North Mississippi All Stars, and I had the privilege of Eric Deaton on lead guitar. The show was broadcast on Rebel Radio at the University of Mississippi and beamed out around the state on Mississippi Public Radio. Now celebrating its 10th year on the air, Thacker Mountain Radio continues to showcase the indigenous music and literature of Mississippi and guest artists from around the world every Thursday at 6:00 pm, usually from OffSquare Books in Oxford.

This episode starts out as an edited version of the Late, Late Breakfast Show with Tracey Moberly on Resonance Radio in London on January 30 featuring guest saxophonists Lol Coxson & Mike Walter and artists Anthea Clarke, Annouchka Bayley & Michael Bucknell, but when she was talking to me about John Lennon I thought I’d insert a special performance of “John Sinclair” sung by Chad Henson with the Beatles Tribute Band closing out “Two Days in the Life” at Proud Larry’s in Oxford, Mississippi one week later on Friday, February 6. I join the band after Chad sings to recite “friday the 13th.” After the Resonance Radio section ends, the closing music is by Charles Shaar Murray and myself, recorded at Nick Smith’s place in Siani Mews in London on January 29th, 2009.

The 250th episode of the John Sinclair Radio Show features excepts from an on-stage interview moderated by ______ with Warn DeFever and myself that followed the ClubTransMedial Festival screening of my movie TWENTY TO LIFE, a film by Steve Gebhardt, at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg in Berlin. Warn had performed at the festival with his noise band called Princess Dragonmom and the two of us combined our generational insights into the unique urban phenomenon known as Detroit, interspersed with recordings from the Motor City by the MC-5, Aretha Franklin, Joe L., Andre Williams, John Lee Hooker, and the Lyman Woodard Organization, plus an excerpt from Lenny Bruce and the Sun Ra Arkestra “live” at the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival.

American expatriates and London cognescenti celebrated together at the Café Oto on Inauguration Day with music by tenor saxophonist, flutist and poet Elliott Levin, bassist Jair-Rohm Parker Wells, drummer Tony Bianco, pianist Robbie Knight, and singer Carole Denis. Tracey Moberly invited me to join her and her guests again for the Late Late Breakfast Show broadcast from Tracey’s art center and bar called The Foundry over Resonance Radio every Friday at noon. She had “live” music from pianist Mike Walter and the reed duo of Noel Taylor & Shabaka Hutchins, poetry by Grassy Knoll, and conversations with Reel News film-maker Sean Day, artists Ken Flowers and Yodette Garez, and the brilliant novelist Stewart Home. Jair-Rohm Wells and I contribute a duet performance of my poem “Friday the 13th”.

Two days before I left London this time I met with the great British music journalist Charles Shaar Murray at the Siani Mews home of my manager, Nick Smith, in Turnpike Lane, for an interview to be shaped by Charles into a story for the Sunday Times. We talked for quite a while, took a break, and Charles came back playing the guitar and singing. We’d been discussing Boogie Man, his biography of John Lee Hooker, and we were on the same page all the way, so when he started playing I took the liberty of dropping in a poem or two, and for this episode I added recordings by Little Sonny, Eddie Burns, Eddie Kirkland, and a whole bunch of John Lee Hooker. This episode ends with a duet improvisation with Robbie Knight’s keyboards on my poem “Scuze Me While I Kiss the Sky” from his videocast Longcat Weekly 136, recorded nearby at Longcat Studio in Turnpike Lane on January 21, 2009.

37th anniversary

We were celebrating the 37th anniversary of my release from prison on December 13, 1971 and the release of my new book IT’S ALL GOOD: A John Sinclair Reader after hours at the Cannabis College on this Friday evening when I gave my first public reading of the story called “John Sinclair” that starts off the book with an account of my liberaton from penitentiary life through the agency of John Lennon. That reading is the centerpiece of this episode, preceded by music by Detroit’s own Pat in the Hat from his new Funky D Records CD, a live cut by me with Harmonica Shah and his band in Ann Arbor last July, and some improvisational beat-box music from Thumpah Lee, and followed by the Trevor Menear reading of the Lennon tune and a duet performance of my poem for Lennon called “Friday the 13th” with Jair-Rohm Wells on bass, recorded in London last month. Happy Freedom, everybody!

The John Sinclair Radio Show celebrated its 4th anniversary at the Cannabis College on the Monday afternoon of the 21st Cannabis Cup and the 10th birthday of the Cannabis College itself. Our stone regulars were on hand to celebrate our own annual reunion: Adam Brook, Kenny Post, Merll Truesdale, Jim Epstein, and Walter Noons, who never made it on the air. The music is another all-Detroit program featuring recordings by Harmonica Shah, Scott Morgan & Guardian Angel, the Detroit Cobras, Bettye Lavette, Odessa Harris, Nathaniel Mayer, Joe L., Andre Williams, and Eddie Burns, plus a “live” performance by Kenny Post, a cut from my DETROIT LIFE album, and the number that was the first thing we played on our very first program four years ago: “It’s All Good” with LangeFrans & Baas B..

 Megaplaten, gigantic record show

On this cold, rainy Saturday in Amsterdam Adam Brook and I took the train to Utrecht for this winter’s edition of the gigantic record show called Megaplaten, where I was scheduled to spin an hour of music into the exposition hall and then make our annual Megaplaten episode of the radio show. The DJ set was splendid, but none of the exhibitors were coming up to talk with us, so I decided to go back to the city and cut the show at the 420 Café and edit in into the set of music from Utrecht. Nick Smith & Guiseppe are in from London and Jeff Kabik stopped by to spray me with some new cannabis delivery system. The music is all from Detroit with Johnnie Bassett, Hank Ballard & the Midnighters, the young Bob Seger, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Alberta Adams, Barbara Lewis, Joe Weaver, Marvin Gaye, Bob Seeley & Bob Baldori. Was (Not Was), Thornetta Davis, Todd Rhodes & Connie Allen, and Scott Morgan & PowerTrane “live” at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac MI on the recent Zenta New Year celebration.

The final selection is with Mark Ritsema & jair-Rohm Wells, recorded at Rough Trade Records on Monday, November 10.

IT’S ALL GOOD: A John Sinclair Reader.

This joyous return to the Café Oto in London’s Dalston neighborhood was organized by Dylan Harding for HeadPress to celebrate the release of my new book, IT’S ALL GOOD: A John Sinclair Reader, with an introduction by Mark Ritsema, and the publication of Headpress 28 which I had the honor of serving as editor alongside Headpress founder David Kerekes. My publishers brought Mark Ritsema over from Rotterdam to play guitar and Jair-Rohm Parker Wells down from Sweden to play bass, and we were joined by members of the London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO) in various combinations as this splendid evening of music & verse unfolded. We performed poems from IT’S ALL GOOD, a voice & piano duet on “nutty” and the premiere musical performance of a new poem written last week for my late brother David called “little rootie tootie.”

The Embassy of the Living Sun Ra

Last month the ZXZW Festival in Tilburg, Holland sent me an invitation to attend this year’s event to witness the Embassy of the Living Sun Ra, a week-long residency by the 15-piece Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen. I was able to attend the last four nights of musical delights and at the Saturday night concert at the Paradox Club I stuck out my little digital recorder and captured most of the second set. On Sunday the Arkestra concluded its week with a free concert in the park downtown, and this episode starts with the closing number from that concert, “We Travel the Spaceways.” Before leaving Tilburg I got my host, Ries Doms, a ZXZW board member, to take a break and explain how this festival and the Embassy of the Living Sun Ra came to be.

At Home with the Legendary Lee Harris

For this episode I took the National Rail Service train from London to suburban Orpington to meet my spiritual leader Rev. Ferre van Beveren, his companion Ms. Moira, and the estimable young Mr. O.J. to drive from Moira’s place all the way to Suffolk in East Anglia to the venerable home of Lee Harris, “The Spiritual Kid” and legendary figure in the development of the London underground since the 1960s. Lee served us a fine home-cooked meal and sat still for my questioning, his responses to which I edited and interspersed with recordings by River Styx, the Rolling Stones, Afrissippi, Lee Harris & Howard Marks, the Mystery School Players and the Drum Druids, most of them taken from Lee’s productions titled E.W. with the Mystery School Players and Alchemy: 30 Years of Counter Culture.
