This guy is the ‘selector’. The DJ is the one talking over the music, a little like a host. But in Jamaica, maybe the most musical country in the world, they made an art form of this ‘hosting’. In the sixties, artist like U-Roy & Big Youth, became famous thru their style of talking over the music. Selectors played instrumental or dub versions of the latest tunes and these guys started to DJ. They were talking about everything, politics, love, music, ganja, Rasta, etc. At some point in time, late sixties, producers like C.S. Dodd (Studio One) and Duke Reid (Treasure Ilse) started to record these DJ’s. A new style was born. Until this day, the DJ style (also known as Ragga, Raggamufin, Banton Style, SingJay) is very popular in the Dancehall.
