Jazz RootsWWOZ-FM, New Orleans

Jazz Roots #11 takes a long look at Duke Ellington & His Cotton Club Orchestra and his recordings for BlueBird Records from 1928-1934, taken from a BMG collection titled Jubilee Stomp . Duke’s Cotton Club Orchestra features early jazz greats Bubber Miley, Arthhur Whetsol, Tricky Sam Nanton, Otto Hardwicke, Barney Bigard, Harry Carney, Fred Guy, Wellman Braud, Sonny Greer, Teddy Bunn, Juan Tizol, and vocalist Ivy Anderson. Then the spotlight swings over to the Spirits of Rhythm and their progression from the Washboard Rhythm Kings to the Five Cousins to the Five Spirits of Rhythm to the immortal Spirits of Rhythm themselves. These recordings from 1932 feature Teddy Bunn, Leo Watson, Wellman Braud, Red McKenzie and others, taken from the Dutch CD Great Moments of Jazz (Retrieval).
