Jazz RootsWWOZ-FM, New Orleans

Jazz Roots episode 12 continues the story of the Spirits of Rhythm through 1932-34 with Leo Watson, Teddy Bunn, Wellman Braud; and their compatriots, plus two cuts with guest vocalist Ella Logan from a 1934 Hollywood session, all from the Great Moments of Jazz CD on Retrieval Records. Tom steps back a decade and brings on the great Armond Piron & His New Orleans Orchestra from sessions in New York City in December 1923 and February 1924 during their residency at the Cotton Club, now collected on Azure Records CD-13. The ensemble includes Crescent City jazz pioneers Peter & Charles Bocage, Lorenzo Tio Jr., Steve Lewis, and Louis Cottrell, with Piron and Lewis handling the vocals. Piron and the band returned to New Orleans and recorded there in March 1924 with Lula Bolden and Lilly Jackson singing the blues.
