Classics from the First 40 Years of Jazz Recording
Tom’s opening set today features recordings by the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra with Coleman Hawkins, Don Redman, and Buster Bailey, made for Vocalion (as the Dixie Stompers) and Harmony Records in 1925. Redman is featured on vocals with the Dixie Stompers in what Morgan refers to as the early roots of rap music. There’s a lot more of Fletcher Henderson & His Orchestra before guitarist Teddy Bunn steps into the feature spotlight for a set of music with Spencer Williams and with the Mezz Mezzrow-Tommy Ladnier outfit.
