This week’s program begins with a series of George Gershwin piano rolls from 1919-25, then a complete “Rhapsody in Blue” as premiered by Paul Whiteman’s orchestra at Aeolian Hall and assembled here from two sessions in 1925 and 1927. The spotlight turns to the Louisiana Rhythm Kings recorded on Vocalion in 1929-30 with Red Nichols at the helm and featured musicians Glenn Miller, Vic Burton, Jack Teagarden, Joe Sullivan, Dave Tough, Red Nichols, PeeWee Rusell and Jimmy Dorsey. The Rhythm Kings complete their set on the next episode of Jazz Roots.
